Constitution Day of Ukraine is one of the most important holidays of the state. It is known to be the Basic Law of the state and has the highest legal force.

The President of Ukraine takes an oath of allegiance to the people, laying his hands on the Constitution and the Peresopnytsia Gospel.

The basic law of the state was passed on the night of June 28, 1996. People’s deputies worked on the project for almost a day, staying in the session hall without breaks. This important event was preceded by 6 years of hard work, consultations, debates and agreements.

“There is a Constitution!” – with these words the then Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Moroz announced the adoption of the Basic Law. It happened with the votes of 315 people’s deputies.

The preamble, the introductory part, states that the Council adopted the Constitution on behalf of the Ukrainian people – citizens of Ukraine of all nationalities.
