US President Joe Biden has said in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin that a new invasion of Ukraine would have drastic consequences.
This was said in a White House statement following the phone conversation.
“President Biden called on Russia to de-escalate tensions with Ukraine. He made clear that the United States and its allies and partners would respond decisively if Russia invades Ukraine,” the statement said.
Biden also expressed support for diplomatic engagement early next year on bilateral dialogue on strategic stability, in NATO through the NATO-Russia Council and in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
“President Biden reiterated that substantial progress in these dialogues can only occur in a de-escalation, not an escalation,” the White House said.
Recall that Biden and Putin held virtual talks on December 7, they chatted for more than two hours. The main topic was the buildup of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine. Then Putin demanded so-called “security guarantees” for Russia.
