A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pushing for the Pentagon to expedite consideration of a transfer of Gray Eagle and Reaper attack drones to Ukraine. Seventeen members of Congress wrote to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
This was reported by Reuters. Congressmen are demanding that the Pentagon’s ongoing risk assessment of Ukraine’s request for attack drones be accelerated over concerns that the sophisticated equipment on the drones could pose a security risk to the United States if the drones fall into Russian hands.
“Delays continue to occur in the delivery of Gray Eagle systems to Ukraine, despite urgent requests from Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov and Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova. A thorough risk assessment should not come at the expense of the lives of Ukrainians,” the Congressmen said in an appeal to Austin.
The letter, which was signed by Republicans and Democrats, also refers to the recent achievements of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The legislators emphasized that “the use of more powerful unmanned aerial systems on the battlefield will allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to better hold the territory that they so hard to return.”
Note that American Gray Eagle drones equipped with anti-tank missiles are also very effective for reconnaissance purposes. Such an UAV costs $10 million.
