Ukraine has asked European grid companies for spare parts for the electricity system as Russia destroys the country’s energy infrastructure. The request has also come to Fingrid. Fingrid is able to deliver equipment for substations to Ukraine in particular.

The European grid companies have received a request from Ukrainian companies to support the Ukrainian electricity grid with equipment deliveries through the companies’ cooperation organization ENTSO-E. The country has especially recently suffered from attacks by attackers on the electricity grid and power plants, and spare parts have been requested from other parts of Europe to repair these damages.

The lists of the necessary equipment that came through ENTSO-E are accurate, as it is important that the equipment matches the voltage of the Ukrainian main grid. Fingrid is able to deliver equipment for substations to Ukraine, such as electrical network separators and circuit breakers, current measuring current transformers and protection relays that protect the network. Equipment is freed from the stations being dismantled, because Fingrid is currently renovating a large number of its own substations and building completely new ones, so the old, functioning station equipment can be delivered to Ukraine. Otherwise, they would go to recycling.

“Fingrid’s own energy security is not compromised, because we also keep enough spare parts in case of equipment failures,” Fingrid’s director Timo Kiiveri says.

Fingrid is still waiting for confirmation from ENTSO-E that the equipment can be delivered. Some of the equipment to be sent will be dismantled from the old stations, which will take its own time, so they may be launched in January 2023. More will be able to be sent later during 2023.
